Postgraduate Opportunities in Osteoporosis & Falls Management

University of Derby, School of Education, Health & Sciences

The University of Derby currently offers a range of postgraduate modules in bone health, osteoporosis and falls management specifically related to the needs of healthcare professionals.

The programme is flexible and is delivered through the distance learning format of Learning Through Work (LTW) which enables students to study the programme from all over the country and around the world. The modular format allows the student to design their own programme specific to their individual needs. Each module provides 15 credits to either a Postgraduate Certificate or students may continue studying up to Masters level. It will enable healthcare professionals to develop skills of analysis and critical reflection to respond to the ever changing nature of healthcare. This externally accredited competency based award will contribute to the students PREPP and CPD requirements.

Aims of the programme
The aims of the programme are to:

  • Develop an appreciation of the knowledge base related to the theoretical principles of osteoporosis/falls management
  • Critically reflect on how the theoretical principles may be applied to work-based practice for the benefit of patient/client care
  • Critically review the current evidence base and ensure continuous personal and professional development
  • Encourage students to become agents for change in Osteoporosis/Falls management and to enhance practice

Modules Available
There are 2 core modules for the Postgraduate Certificate, these are:

  • Using Research at Work - towards informed practice
  • Diagnosis & Management of Osteoporosis

Optional modules include:

  • Clinical Considerations of Osteoporosis

  • Improving Bone Health: Promotion and Education within a Primary Care and Clinical Setting
  • Science and Instrumentation of Bone Densitometry

  • Negotiated Module (Work based)

Entrance to the programme is available 3 times a year through the LTW website. The majority of students study one module per semester and are allocated a Module Tutor with whom they may discuss their progress. Communication is mainly via the LTW dialogue option, telephone or if the student wishes, individual tutorial sessions may be arranged. A programme of Study Days is provided which the student may attend if appropriate to their module choices.

Assessment is via a mixture of written assignments, case histories, log books or poster presentation
